Hymne

I’ve decided that playing Hymne by Vangelis on the piano is a lot like having a conversation with God.

From the opening measure, the song falls into a comfortable rhythm — a familiar cadence that feels like home. The single-note melody line is simple and quiet at first, but it soon builds in intensity. Chords expand as passion increases, yet the heartbeat of the underlying theme remains steady, unshaken, dependable.

An exquisite beauty flows through the music, like sunlight breaking through clouds, scattering doubt with its splintered shafts of promise.

And then. Like a swollen mountain stream, racing itself with hilarious joy to a crystal lake it once glimpsed in dreams of spring, the song erupts into laughter — the steady pace suddenly doubling from pure delight and unfettered faith.

A calmness settles over the conversation. The former rhythm returns, and a lightness lifts the notes into heavenly places. Passion rises once more. A peaceful passion filled with praise, adoration, and worship.

Then, like a “let it be so,” the notes climb in intervals to the final broken chord, a soft, ascending “Amen.”

I thought you might want to know that. Time to go catch a plane.
