Today I sang It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood to Jacob. When I posed the melodic question, “Would you be mine?” he tried to rush away as he proclaimed he couldn’t remember what a “neighbor” was. Nice try, Jacob. Though I didn’t fall for his ruse, I generously offered to help him out with the following multiple choice test:
“What is a neighbor?”
a) a banana
b) a stopwatch
c) A PERSON
d) a kitten
He made an F – -. Maybe I should make him watch that new kid’s show starring Homsar. “Stave it off 1,2,3 and now you can count to THREE.”
We saw Jr. III in concert at Joe Buck’s tonight. Smooth jazz, mmm hmmm. They had a 45-minute song, during which the singer channeled a beatnik and recited this long speech about ashes and the sun and moon and change and other stuff. But mostly ashes. On another song the drummer (who I was told is a mild-mannered lawyer by day) played a rhythm that repeated every ten beats. When the song ended I asked him what meter he was playing, and he said, “I have no idea.” That’s beyond cool. He’s my hero.
We are between the sun and the moon and everything is ashes, ashes, ashes.
Have a nice day!
Haha… then perhaps a nice Blush? Or perhaps maybe you were thinking of a nice dark Guinness stout?
I can count to four! I wonder what measure that would be in if you sang it that way… It was a wonderful concert… although I was saddened by the fact that they didn’t play the Reuben this time… Maybe sometime soon we will have CDs for you to pick up at the coffeehouse. I’m sure everyone wants one, young and old.
Oh yeah, I enjoyed our conversation tonight… it was interesting hearing what’s been going on with your writing and stuffitystuff.

“Hey man, that’s outta sight.”

I would love to have the CD. I could listen to it over and over and memorize the words to that 45-minute song. Then I could walk around town wearing black slacks, a black turtleneck, a black beret, and dark shades. When people said, “It’s 95 degrees out here; aren’t you hot?” I could answer, “I’m between the sun and the moon and everything is ashes, ashes, ashes . . .” and I could tap the ashes, ashes, ashes from my extra-long cigarette on their surprised little heads and glide away in my coolness.
I enjoyed our conversation, too. Thanks for your interest in my stuffitystuff.

Yes. You’re right. BUT if you squint just so, you can still make it out. It also helps if you wear dark shades. Dig it.

I can DIG it. Cool, baby.
I can DIG it. Cool, baby.
Talking about quizzes and cats (well you almost did.
What do you get when:
You’ve got too much time on yours hands
a sharp knife
a green grapefruit
a very patient cat
and a camera????
Now you have to imagine that there is a picture of a green cat with a hat made out of a grapefruit.
Hmmm I think it was funnier with the pic. Never mind I’ve just arrived in the Tropics and by the way a very very cold not too dry white wine slips down the throat so easily.

The whole cat and the grapefruit thing has me thinking you’ve been sampling a few too many of those very-cold-not-too-dry white wines. Mmm hmm. ;o)
