That previous post was mostly a nod to Luke, the Kryptic King. (That sounds a lot like Krispy Kreme, but I assure you they’re very different.)
So. The signing. It was fun. It really was. The bookstore sold 40+ of my books during it. They were happy. I got to visit with lots of people. I was happy. I’ve decided I really like people. I already knew that, but I didn’t know how I’d feel sitting at a table signing autographs, which seems so . . . so . . . I don’t know. So something. But everyone who came in was friendly and enthusiastic and interested, especially in the next book. I knew most of the people, but I also met some new folks who were just as nice as they could be.
Linda Purnell came by, Luke. She said to tell you hello.
My favorite moment: When someone pointed out that my books, which were displayed behind me, were on a shelf labeled “Best-Selling Authors.” We took a picture of that. :o)
My other favorite moment: Autographing Jesse’s bookmark. It was an evolving autograph. First he wanted a pixie, so I drew a pixie. Then I put a magic wand in her hand. I was drawing little sprinkles coming out of the wand and saying, “She’s sprinking star dust . . .” and Jesse interrupted me and said, “On a robot.” So I had to draw a robot. I also indicated a spot on the bookmark where he could tape his heirloom button he won for . . . well, he didn’t do anything to win it except heap flattery on my head. But he won it. And now he has a place to display it beside the pixie and robot.
There were no lines around the block. In fact, most of the time there was no line at all. Just a leisurely procession of well-wishers. I was never idle long enough to get bored. Didn’t do any reading or editing. Just chatted with the bookstore staff during temporary lulls. Ate some refreshments. They took a picture of me poised to eat a cookie. One of the bookstore employees organized this signing for a marketing class at ETBU, so she took lots of pictures.
If you came, thank you. Joe, thank you especially, because I know you weren’ t feeling well. I love you forever.
If you couldn’t come, but wanted to, and you still want a book, they have some more. I signed a few copies before I left, and told them I’d come sign more if they had requests for them. (And I can always sign it if you come over. We haven’t installed an electric fence to keep the paparazzi out yet.)
As I said good-bye, the bookstore owner said she definitely wants me to come back for a signing on the next book. I said of course I would. Then I drove home, worked out, did laundry, admired the flowers George and Jacob were planting in the flower bed, fixed dinner, ate a bit of George’s birthday pie (rhubarb) with vanilla ice-cream, watched a movie with George and Jacob, and went to bed. The glamorous life of a person who is not even close to famous. But thanks for caring! If you care, that’s enough for me.
rich and famous
Wow- so it is still possible to sneak up and get a tell all picture of …um…your compost pile or worm farm/experiments? Good. I will tell the press. 🙂
Glad that your day went so well and was still so full of simple pleasures. Rhubarb pie? Did you have to burn it for him? 🙂
… and I knew her when.
So glad to hear that your book signing went well! That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you! I know a famous author!
Mmm… Krispy Kreme.

Wow… I’m now embedded in your list of “favorite moments.” I am honored to the highest level of honoration. I still have yet to tape (or sew) my button to the bookmark, but when I do I will show it to everyone in the world and pray that no one steals it. After all, there aren’t many people who have an awesome buttony bookmark like I do 🙂

Re: rich and famous
No, we ate the pie cooked to flaky, golden-brown perfection.
The compost pile is as photogenic as ever, but we have no worm farm experiments. George doesn’t farm worms, he just studies them. He prefers finding them in their natural habitats . . . you know, worms going about their daily business, buying, selling, marrying and giving in marriage, that sort of thing.
Re: … and I knew her when.
Yes, you will always be able to say you knew me when I was just an unknown, and everyone will say, “Who?”
Re: Bookmark
Awesome buttony bookmarks are rare indeed. I can pretty much guarantee you that the one you have is the only one like it in existence anywhere now or for evermore, so be it, amen. Selah. Pause and think about that, or insert musical interlude *here* with BGVs singing, “Yeah, yeah, yeah!”
Re: Bookmark
*grins* Maybe one day our Pixie of Modesty will grant you some wishes.

You know…I drove through Marshall that very next day and kicked myself repeatedly for not getting to your signing. Thanks a lot, I have a bruise now!
Seriously, I am so happy for you…and speaking as one who has read your book…you deserve all this and so much more, sister!
xoxo
Nevermind the signing . . . what are you doing driving through Marshall and not coming to see me??? I would love it if you showed up at my house.
No more kicking yourself. And thanks for your affirmations. It’s nice to think you believe in me.
Love, EZ

Heh . . . yeah. But that’s when he was in love with his sister.
Oh, well. Thanks for caring! :o)
