Most mornings when I wake up, the first thing I do is get my bearings. I tell myself what day it is and state the most important thing(s) on my agenda. Out loud. And no, I’m not joking. I don’t know if I’m a heavy sleeper or what, but I usually wake up in a state of anytime-anywhere-anythingishness. Working at home has something to do with it no doubt.
Anyway, today when I woke up (after two of those briefly-close-your-eyes-only-to-have-ten-then-twenty-minutes-miraculously-disappear-in-a-few-second’s-time experiences), I said, “It’s Thursday. I’m going to Dallas.”
And the crowd says, “Man, she takes her time getting to the point.”
Whatever. I choose not to be offended by your imaginary impatience.
The point is, yes, today I’m going to Dallas. And this evening I’m hanging out with friends I’ve known since high school, Darlene and Jill, which is like saying “Lucy and Ethel.” That much fun. Then I’ll spend the night at Darlene’s house, and tomorrow morning I speak on Beauty from Brokenness to a MOPS group. Nancy Fowler, the woman who instigated my invitation to speak, is a Mentor Mom for the group and a dear, long-time friend. Way back in the mid-70s, she and her husband hosted our youth group in their home every week for Bible study and worship. How lovely that she’s still building into younger people’s lives! When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
So, it’s sort of a flash-back-to-high-school next couple of days for me. Then Friday evening I’ll flash forward to hang out with my future daughter-in-law for dinner and a slumber party with her and her roommate. Should be a fun and rather heart-exploding-with-love-and-joy weekend.
In the spirit of all this past and future nostalgia (work with me, people), I posted some thoughts on Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead today at The Master’s Artist. I hope you’ll drop by and share a few of your own.
Happy . . . um, Thursday! Yeah. That’s right. Have a great one.
Jill, me, and Darlene (she will kill me for posting this photo) at a high school reunion. Hooray for fun friends!
Hooray! I love your new bloggy home!
I really like your new site! Hope you have lots of fun and make an incredible impact (which I’m sure you will). Be blessed!
Lovely site. And I cracked up at you not being offended by our imaginary impatience.
Have a wonderful weekend.
I seriously need to make a road trip north.
Yes, you seriously do!
Jeanne – I am so glad you were able to come to Dallas and speak to our MOPS group. What a delight to meet you and hear about your journey. I started your book shortly after I put the kids down for nap that same day and could not stop reading this truly beautiful story. Yes, beauty, indeed. The ripple of the water has reached my heart and encouraged both my faith and perspective. God is good!
Misty, thank you so much! I had a wonderful time with all of you. What a precious group! I’m deeply grateful the book is encouraging you, and I really appreciate your taking the time to let me know. Blessings on you and your family.
God is good indeed.
Love, Jeanne
