So, wow. I’ve been truant for quite a while. I hope this doesn’t mean I’ll have to repeat a cyber grade.
Much has happened since our adventure in sandwich land. Christmas for one thing. Lots of family togetherness. Lots of friend togetherness. Lots of meaningful life. And now a new year has dawned. Do you know why 2007 is special? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s the year of my personal Jubilee. Yes, my friends, it’s true. I turn 50 this year. And as everyone knows, the year one turns 50 must be spent in continual celebration. Of course, those who know me know I’m not one to shun celebration at any time for any reason. What’s that? Broccoli’s on sale? Let’s party! But this year it’s a mandate. Celebrate we must, and we will.
So far we’re off to a great start. Luke was here the first seven days of the year, and his mere presence makes the mundane merry. On the 3rd, Lisa Samson and her way-too-adorable daughter, Gwynnie, arrived for four festive days. Lisa, a talented author of nineteen books, came to research a novel she plans to set in Marshall. I think I learned almost as much as she did about the various people and places we visited. It’s amazing what you discover about your own town when you dig a little. The whole time with the Samsons was pure delight. And so much seemed to fall into place for her book. I can’t wait to read it! (Check out Lisa’s blog to read her accounts of our adventures. And be sure to scope out her published works in the side bar. She’s an awesome writer!)
Lisa and Gwynnie left after church Sunday, and our family hopped in the van to drive Luke to the airport in Dallas. After dropping him off, George, Jacob, and I rendezvoused with Fran the Speedo Man, Mary, Sophie, Aidan, and Julia DeMuth for a fiesta at On the Border. What a cool family! I love them all. They moved back to Texas mid-December after two years in France, and they’re living in a two-room apartment in a barn until they close on a house. Even though life is crazy for them right now, our evening was punctuated with laughter. As we were leaving, Fran even did a little impromptu cha cha to the Spanish music piped outside into the parking lot. That Fran. He’s got the moves. I bet Mary was glad it was too cold for his speedo.
Monday when George and I sat down to dinner alone, we looked at each other and said, “It’s so quiet.” Sadly the dust from round one is settling, but never fear. It’s Jubilee year! The celebration must go on. Next week I start choreography rehearsals for a 50s musical production at the high school. Swing dancing and rocking around the clock. Sounds like a party to me.
By the way, you’re invited to this year-long hootenanny. It’s your excuse to celebrate, even when broccoli isn’t on sale. Don’t worry if the boss catches you break dancing in the break room and demands an explanation. Just shoot him a hello expression and say, “Jeanne’s Jubilee.” He’ll probably join in the fun and then give you a raise. Oh, and if anyone needs help with dance moves, I know the perfect teacher. He lives in a barn, and his name is Fran.
you make me laugh
This is from the wife of Fran the speedo man:
Thanks for sharing Fran’s amazing talent with the rest of the world. Had it not been for you, no one would know of his keen ability to bust a move.
You know, nobody’s going to believe you’re 50. But that’s a good thing.
I love the idea of celebrating all year. I certainly need something to celebrate and your jubilee is a great reason.
Jen T.
before i forget – this is Heather G.
since i have a habit of leaving off my name.
Happy Birth year!
i used the whole jubilee thing as the sitzen leben of the novel i just finished. love the idea!
and as far as your absence, so, doing the real life thing again, huh? neglecting all of us computer junkies?
i’d like to see some of this move-busting of which you speak…
Re: you make me laugh
You’re welcome, Mary, though I sincerely doubt talent like Fran’s could remain hidden from the world for long. I mean, you never know when a scout for So You Think You Can Dance? might be passing the On the Border parking lot just as an amazing move busts. Before you could say, “cha cha cha,” Fran would find himself as a Celine Dion back-up dancer, and the trend in fashion would shift to speedo chic. It could totally happen. But meanwhile, he should probably keep his day job. Just to be safe.

Thanks, Jen. I like to think I don’t look 50. But then, what does 50 look like? If I’m turning 50, then doesn’t 50 look like me? I suppose this is one of those profound mysteries that can’t be fathomed. Or not.
Please make the most of my Jubilee. Play the J-card on evenings when you don’t feel like cooking, or if you really need to get away for a bit–like to go on a Caribbean cruise or some other little outing. It’s the all-purpose purpose. Enjoy!
Re: before i forget – this is Heather G.
Thanks, Heather. So, your novel is about setting slaves free and forgiving debts in Germany? Cool!
Fran’s move-bustage is most excellent. If you ever have the pleasure, I guarantee you’ll be all up ons.
We miss you!!
Gwynnie and I had the greatest time, Jeanne! You were a wonderful host and research partner-in-crime. We hope to get back to Marshall again sometime if you’ll have us!
Party time
Woohoo! I’m always up for a party, and who better to celebrate than YOU? I can hardly believe that you’re 50, but then again, I can hardly believe that I turn 30 this year. We’ll have to really live it up at MH. When’s the big day?

Re: We miss you!!
If we’ll have you? Are you joking? Come back tomorrow and we’ll swing the door wide and welcome you with open arms. (Surely you neglected some essential research and must return to right the matter. Think hard.)
We miss you, too. Come again soon and often. I mean it. ♥
Re: Party time
Ah, well, the big day isn’t until September. But this is my year of Jubilee, so no matter. We’ll whoop it up at MH to infinity and beyond. Just try not to sprain anything in your aging condition, Tina. 😉
Re: Party time
I’m with you, Jeanne. Have a great 50th birthday year. Mine was last year. Let’s party!
Suzan
Wow! The Samsons and then the DeMuths–how did you get so lucky? You must live in a very desirable geographic conjunction, that’s all I can guess.
Hope to meet you all at the next ACFW. Now there’s a desirable geographic conjunction…I’m a hopin’!
Celebration time, come on
OK, so I’m hearing Kool and the Gang in my head right now, but hey, I can. This is my Jubilee year, too! I have been told my daughters may be planning something, but I’ve got 9 months to get ready for it. 🙂
Have a happy year! (when’s your birthday?)
Linda G.
Re: Party time
Hot diggidy, Suzan. You can teach me the ropes! 🙂
Well, Lisa had to travel 800 miles to get here, so I’m not sure my geographic conjunction had a lot to do with it. 🙂
I hope to meet your anonymous self at ACFW, too.
Re: Celebration time, come on
Go, Linda! Mine’s September 9. You?
Re: Celebration time, come on
It’s Sept. 15. September is a good month. 🙂
