Episode Thursday Morning (not yet rated)

Grace is home! And today is her birthday. 🙂

I met her at the Dallas airport late Tuesday night. Or, I should say, early Wednesday morning. Her flight was scheduled to arrive at 11:52 PM, but it landed around 1:20 A. I sat in the baggage claim area chatting with a young woman waiting for the same flight. She had to be at work at 4:00 AM. She works for “the Army and Navy.” I told her I hoped no one’s life depended on her level of alertness. She laughed. In fact, she laughed at everything I said. People who laugh at everything you say make pleasant baggage-claim-area companions.

I’m soaking up Grace’s presence like a Bounty papertowel soaks up blue-dyed water. Which makes one wonder why anyone would have blue-dyed water in a glass just waiting to be spilled on one’s pristine kitchen countertop. Which reminds me how often I pretend I’m in a movie or TV commercial when engaged in mundane tasks. When I get down on my hands and knees to scrub the tile floor in the bathroom, I’m Cinderella cleaning the large flagstones in the mansion foyer and singing, “Sing Sweet Nightingale,” accompanied by her reflection singing harmony in the bubbles. (I haven’t quite mastered the bubble-harmony thing. Still working on that.) When I make Grace’s Death by Chocolate Cake this afternoon I will be Vienne from Chocolat. When I eat the cake I will be myself saying, “Mmmmmm,” after every bite.

Luke is in London! For the next two months he’ll study and travel in England with a group from Wheaton. It’s exciting to imagine all the adventures that await him. Life is amazing, no? Always something new around the corner. Makes me want to skip.

This weekend we’ll be in Nacogdoches for a wedding. Parties, friends, dancing, food, laughter, dancing, conversation, and (you guessed it) dancing! I’m stoked. If only Luke were here to swing dance with me. He’s such an awesome dancer. Never fear, though. I’ve already been recruiting substitutes. This is serious business, folks. One mustn’t waste one’s opportunities in matters of such weighty import. As the Boy Scouts say, always be prepared. Translation: You never know when you’ll need them, so keep your dancing shoes handy.

Sunday we leave for Colorado. I hope I’m not being unfaithful to my native land when I say I will not miss the Texas heat.

OH, oh, oh! The recording in Austin went great! We rocked like only mature, mellow adults can. More about that later.

I will return as soon as ever I can. Until then, laugh often, dance whenever possible, and give away lots of hugs. They don’t cost a cent, and yet they pay huge dividends.

Jeanne, You make me smile with your joy. And I know the blessings of having a daughter come home. My younger daughter should be home for a few days in August before she moves to Alaska. I know I’ll savor her presence. Have safe travels.
    Blessings,
    Linda Gilmore

  7. We are all in chocolate heaven now, having died about an hour ago. If ever a death were envy-worthy, this would be it. My tastebuds are still rejoicing.

Luke is the only one of us you won’t see this weekend. Do you swing dance? If so, I’ll add you to my list of victims, er, partners. 😉

    See you soon!

Thanks, Linda. I love having Grace here. She’s such a delight.

Alaska? Wow! What will she do there? Besides freeze, I mean. Brrrr. The Texas heat is bad, but I’m even wimpier about intense cold. I hope you have some wonderful time with her before she becomes an Eskimo. 🙂

  16. Hey Jean. I’m watching the news this AM, and praying. Is Luke OK? Have you heard from him?

Just know that I’m thinking about you.

    Love,

  19. Thank heaven …

Good to hear from you. I got worried when I saw the news, your Mom had recently posted that you were studying abroad. Glad you’re OK. Hope it wasn’t too close to you.

    Hi, Allen.

Thanks for your concern! We returned home from Colorado a couple of hours ago. Luke’s group was in London at the time of the attacks, but were not affected by the bombings. Our e-mail access was limited while on vacation, but Wheaton contacted us by phone, e-mail, and posted a notice on their website, so we didn’t have to worry long.

They have moved on to Oxford now, where Luke will be able to correspond with us by e-mail.

Thanks again for your kind thoughts!
