Old married couples

Just like every other day, they lunched across from one another, each perched in the familiar spot. She ate twice as fast as he did, all the while chattering away. He seemed distracted, constantly looking to the right or left, perhaps seeking a way to escape the incessant twittering of her voice.

She munched on, never noticing his dilemma. “You won’t believe what your son did last night. No, you won’t believe it. It’s probably the fault of those wild friends, but as they say, ‘birds of a feather . . .’ Anyway, as I was telling you, you won’t believe what he did. I warned you it would come to this some day. He’s way too cocky for his own good. Really, it’s more than my nerves can stand. I haven’t had a moment’s peace since the day he busted out of his shell . . . ”

I pitied him. How could I not? He ate without haste or enthusiasm. Like a caged bird. A hen-pecked husband. He never made a peep.

I remembered what George once said–something about a scientific study that proved women are wired in such a way as to “need” to utter so-many-thousand words a day. According to the almighty science guys, men’s word-count needs are much smaller. Hmmm. Whatever. Kind of irritating, if you ask me. Today, though, the memory made me laugh.

Maybe it’s true for house finches, too.

This morning I posted at The Master’s Artist about a couple of my neuroses. If you’re into that sort of thing, stop by!

  1. hello

I went to the Master’s Artist and read your entry. I don’t consider myself a writer but I also envision myself in story form quite often. I liked what you said about the tension you feel to put into words something beautiful. I think many people feel that tension but one is a writer when they have the ability to break the tension by actually putting it into words. Interesting thoughts.

  4. Words

isn’t it something like, men have 10,000 words to say per day, and women have 20,000? so you need to use about 10,000 words at work or around the house or where ever on the average day. when the man get’s home he’s speechless and ready to go to sleep and his wife still has 10,000 things to say to him!

You may be a writer and you just don’t know it yet. Like I said, it was something I realized more than chose. From what I’ve read, you seem to have a bit of the poet in you. 🙂

Feel free to visit the Master’s Artist any time. You can post comments there, too. There are nine of us, and I post every other Thursday.

    Thanks.
