The situation is worse than Rusty originally suspected. Despite an abundance of green grass, the cows are consuming five (5) large bales of hay per day. (NOTE #1: These are the round bales that are taller than me, not the squatty rectangular ones used as stage props or for hayrides. NOTE #2: I’m assuming this quantity of hay is being devoured by the cows as a group, not five bales per cow. I may have to clarify this important distinction with Rusty.)
Judging by the somber expression on Rusty’s face and the way he shook his head while relating this latest bit of news, we best all prepare ourselves for eskimo conditions to descend upon us soon. I guess this means I’ll be stocking up on chai and good books.
In other nature news, for reasons beyond my understanding, today I remembered a show I watched years ago on Animal Planet or some such station — you know the kind where a narrator anthropomorphizes everything the animals do by suggesting what they’re thinking. This particular episode dealt with some species of bird. When the male bird wants to attract a mate, he builds her a house, which she then inspects to see if it meets her satisfaction.
Frenzied music provided a soundtrack for the busy little male as he flew to and fro in search of the best house-building materials he could find. He constructed an impressive, enclosed nest with nice touches of blue plastic bag for pizzazz. (According to the show’s announcer, these birds are especially fond of the color blue.) Then he went and, with much fear and trepidation, “told” the female her castle was ready.
She flew up to his work of art, examined it for a few brief moments, then scolded him mercilessly as she ripped the house to shreds. (Of course, all the while the bird-psychic announcer narrated what the two were “saying” to each other.) When she’d completely demolished weeks worth of hard work, she flew off and left Romeo to start over. Amazingly, he did.
I’m trying to figure out why I remembered this. Not to worry, George. I like my house.
I’ve only just begun
This not pertaining to your original entry, but I began a painting tonight with you in mind. I think my idea may be a little bit harder to put on canvas than I imagined, but hopefully I’ll have something great finished when you arrive.

Wow! That’s so cool. I can’t wait to see it.
(I can’t believe you didn’t want to comment about cows. What’s up with that?)
