Some of the journalites have posted movie picks on their sites. I haven’t seen many of the recommended flicks, but I do notice a general trend toward dark, heavy themes. Movies with meat. Plots that make you think.
Call me a nerd, but I honestly adore a movie that makes me laugh till tears pour down my face. A few such were mentioned on various lists, but I don’t recall anyone including my all-time favorites:
~All of the Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers
~The Christopher Guest/Eugene Levy creations: Waiting for Guffman, et al.
~Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail
Last night Jacob put the Monty Python DVD on. Again. Hearing him laugh (Jacob has absolutely the best laugh on the planet!) from the other room, I eventually had to join him. Oh man. So many hilarious scenes. The Tale of Sir Lancelot . . .
The father gestures out the castle tower window: “Someday all of this will be yours.”
The son answers: “What? The curtains?”
The holy hand-grenade of Antioch.
The flight velocity of a laden swallow. (African or European?)
Yeah. I love movies that make me laugh. All the great puns in the Pink Panther movies. Peter Sellers’ physical humor. The absurdities of the Christopher Guest concoctions. Like the My-Dinner-With-Andre Action Figures. “Oh you! You can always get a reservation!” Just too, too great.
So. Call me shallow. And pass the popcorn.
Thanks. Now I’m going to have to rent the Holy Grail again. Jen and I are also fans of comedy. With me, the more absurd and slap-stick, the better. I just wouldn’t sound very “cultured” if I confessed I have laughed my head off over every Adam Sandler and Jim Carey movie (I’m not including Once Bitten by the way).
you’re shallow… and im sorry. i don’t have any popcorn.
love,
luke
Woo, Mr. Mosty-Toasty Sophistication Boy!
You forgot to call me a nerd, too.
xoxo, Momzy
After we watched Bruce Almighty, I told George that Jim Carey is the Dick Van Dyke of this generation. He can be so crude sometimes, but he is a master of physical humor. Adam Sandler, too. I haven’t seen all their movies, because I have a line I refuse to cross when it comes to vulgarity. But I appreciate their talent.
So, I guess I’m a shallow, uncultured nerd. But at least I’m having fun.
“What … Is your favorite colour?”
“Red – NO, BLUE!” AAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
Who would dane to call you and uncultured nerd? Good heavens!! What you have listed is some of the most sophisticated comedy extant!
I LOVE the Pink Panther Movies, although the one where the villian was slowly disintigrated by his death ray until only the eye remained and then “POOF!” gave me nightmares as a kid.
My favorite line is when Clouesau was chasing a suspect, and couldn’t seem to get past the two guys in the zebra suit. In a moment of frustration he said: “I’ll have your stripes for this!” (I nearly fell off the couch.)
I might also add to the list/mix:
Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” “Bananas” “Take the Money & Run” (the scene in the prison laundry is priceless) “Everything you Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask” (VERY Guilty pleasure) and “Manhattan” I think the reason I like his comedies is that his character’s neurosis is so profound that it makes my own seem miniscule.
And while we’re at it, “My Dinner With Andre” which I would think is technically a comedy, although it makes you think.
Now, would you like butter with your popcorn?
Re: “What … Is your favorite colour?”
There are so many scenes in Monty Python that make me laugh just thinking about them. And Peter Sellers . . . I don’t know how any of the other actors kept a straight face. I wouldn’t have been able to.
I haven’t seen any of the Woody Allen movies you listed. I don’t know why. My parents are Woody Allen fans. I guess I’ll have to add them to my ever-growing list.
Actually, I’m kind of into kettle corn these days. Sweet and salty. Yummmm!
I Live it!!
Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail may just very well be the funniest movie on the planet!!!
My sides hurt the next day from laughing so hard, And this happens every time I see it.
Isn’t it funny how, even when you know what’s coming, you laugh just as hard the next time? I love that. I have the same reaction to reading Jack Handey’s Deep Thoughts. They crack me up every time.
