A Date with Delirium

I kept trying to get her attention. She wouldn’t be still long enough to hear a word I had to say. “Please,” I begged, “Just stop for a few seconds and let me get a good look at you.”

She darted away, but I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye just as she hid behind a portrait of Everardus Bogardus, one of George’s ancestors, who supposedly owned (with his wife, Anneke Jans) lots of property on Manhattan Island, now worth millions. The heirs of Everardus and Anneke are still trying to prove the deed is authentic. But that didn’t matter to her. Everardus just provided a handy place to slip from view. Maybe she thought I’d be distracted by his double chin and long, powdered wig–that his austere bearing would quell all fanciful pursuits. Not a chance, Missy! Determination burned behind my eyes. I tried to creep quietly over to the shelf where the portrait sat gazing at me with a serious, disapproving expression. Perhaps Everardus dislikes fairies.

She heard me coming and bolted up to the chandelier, flashing like light from prism to prism. A perfect disguise. “I know you’re up there,” I called. “And I’ve got all day.”

Stillness suddenly fell around me like an oppressive blanket. I felt a tingling sensation run up my spine and into my neck and shoulders. My head felt light.

I looked again. Nothing. But I knew I’d seen her.

Or maybe it’s just the flu.

  1. Thanks. I’m actually better today than I was yesterday. It’s probably not the authentic flu, but one of its lesser wannabes. A cold with attitude.

Delirium is fun, but I find she can’t be fully trusted. She’s not the friend I tell my secrets to, that’s for sure.

I hope you’re having a better day today! ♥ EZ
